Weizen: One of our Original Five returns for our 10th Birthday

Ten years ago, when Cubby Haus began brewing, Weizen was one of our Original Five beers.

You can still find its original stubby label framed on the wall in our bar, alongside the other beers from those early days.

For our 10th Birthday, we thought it was time to brew it again.

A Bavarian wheat beer

Weizen is a traditional Bavarian-style wheat beer. Soft, refreshing and full of character, it brings together the classic fruit and spice flavours of the style.

We brew it using a double decoction mash, German noble hops and Bavarian wheat beer yeast. It’s a brewing method that takes a little more time and effort, but that’s rather the point.

And this particular batch gave us a little surprise.

Sometimes small batches have their own ideas

Our Weizen would normally finish at around 4.5% ABV.

This birthday batch came through the brewhouse much more efficiently than expected and finished at 5.4% ABV.

We could have added water to bring it back to the number we’d planned. But we like the beer as it is and didn’t want to change its flavour simply to make the numbers match.

So we left the beer alone and changed the labels instead.

If you look closely at the cans, you’ll see a green 5.4% ABV label and a cream 1.6 standard drinks label covering the original figures.

It’s not particularly glamorous, but it is very Us.

We brew on a small scale. Batches can have their own character. And when something doesn’t turn out exactly as predicted, we’d rather adapt and tell you what we’ve made than pretend otherwise.

Taste where we started

Weizen is also part of our Original Five flight, bringing together the five beers we started with ten years ago: Australian Pale, Weizen, ESB, Oatmeal Stout and American Brown Ale.
